There are lot of the big things that homeowners need to do before they put their house on the market. However, there are also quite a few minor things that can have a major impact… without a major effort. If your house is on the market, or about to be, here are four easy ideas that will absolutely help your home sell faster.
Buyers want a bright house. It’s that simple. And it is easy to maximize the light in your home to make it look more inviting. Open (or remove) the drapes, clean the windows, open the blinds, buy a couple of new, inexpensive lamps for dark spaces, change the shades on existing light fixtures, and add brighter bulbs wherever possible. Also, think outside to brighten inside… trim back any shrubs, plants, or trees that might be blocking light from getting through the windows. (Pro Tip… When you open blinds think about the angle of the blind to help direct exterior light into specific parts of the room.)
Hide Your Inner Clothes Horse
Empty half of your closets, especially in bedrooms. Go ahead and pack seasonal, non-used items for the move. It will instantly make your closets look larger and neater. And don’t forget to dust shelves and clean floors that you may not have seen for years!
Take Fido And Fluffy For A Long Walk
You love your pets but that doesn’t mean your buyer will love your pets. You might think a pretty puppy will warm a buyer’s heart but… you’re wrong. Everyone is not a dog or cat lover. Buyers don’t want to walk into your home and see a half eaten bowl of dog food, or smell the kitty litter box, or have pet hair stuck to their clothes. It will give them the impression that your house isn’t clean. If you have an open house. or a number of showings. coming up make arrangements to have the pets (and the pet stuff) elsewhere.
Always Be Ready For “Showtime!”
Your home should be ready to show at all times. You never know when your buyer is going to walk through the door. Plus, you also don’t want to turn a potential buyer away because your house isn’t ready. In a hot market like we have today, buyers could (and do) very easily look at another house and never come back to yours. It has happened often with my buyers.
Your home should be available whenever buyers want to see the place (within reason of course) and it has to be in showplace condition. Don’t leave dishes in the sink, don’t leave beds unmade, definitely don’t leave bathrooms messy, and of course, keep the house smelling good, clean, and clutter free. Yes, it’s a little inconvenient, but it will get your house sold… and faster than the competition!
